Trim Your Trees Properly!
Aside from the fact that trees become a real eyesore when they are overgrown, they are also a potential safety risk. When limbs are either dead or have pest infestations on them, they can fall and cause damage to your house and your neighbor’s property. Because of this, it is important to do tree trimming and also inspect your trees on a regular basis. Here are tips on how to trim trees yourself safely and efficiently:
Prepare the Area
Before you start, take the time to clear the area of anything that could be a danger. This could include children and pets. Also, make sure there are no gas lines near the tree. Using two ladders or platforms one at each side of the tree, stand the ladder against one side of the tree and slowly move it against the tree until you reach the halfway mark. Then, engage the safety harness before climbing higher and completely standing the ladder on its opposite side. This way you can manage the tree from both sides.
Removing the Limbs
Make sure to wear protective clothing when trimming trees as this includes a hard hat, goggles, and gloves. Once your safety precautions are taken care of, select a sturdy pole pruning shear. Cut the tree limbs to within an inch of the trunk. If the limbs are growing out of the direction that the tree wants to grow, cut the limb at or slightly below the shoulder. Make sure not to cut the main stem of the tree though. Also, don’t cut the tip of the branch off more than one-fourth of its length.
Water the Limbs
Immediately after trimming, re-water the branches that you just cut. Make sure the cuts are thoroughly sealed with a wound sealant. As the wound sealant dries in the sun, you will need to keep applying water to prevent blisters from forming. This can be a concern if you are trimming a large number of limbs.
